Navigating CINAHLNavigation

Rollover the image to get information

To better help you understand the CINAHL interface, this site provides you with interactive images of major screens found within the database.

To learn more about a specific interface, click on the links listed beneath the headings "Active Tabs" and "Active Buttons". Each link will open a new window with a graphic of the screen you have selected. When you move your mouse over the graphic, pop-up windows will appear, describing specific features and functionalities found within the CINAHL interface.

These interactive images have been developed using Macromedia Flash, therefore you will need to have Flash Player on your computer. If you do not have this plug-in, you can download it for free from the Macromedia Flash Player site.

NOTE: ALL EXAMPLES WILL OPEN IN A NEW WINDOW.

About CINAHL Navigation

Determining where you are in the CINAHL database is easy! Navigation is based upon tabs and buttons. You can figure out where you are by noting which tab is green and which button is pushed in. The green tab marks which screen is active.

The CINAHL database offers a wide variety of search options. However, you must first know where to look! In order to offer a greater knowledge of CINAHL, we have provided some Flash rollovers that give you hints regarding the function of each of the primary buttons in the CINAHL interface.

Active Tabs:

Basic Search: This is the default search screen that appears when the database is opened. Searches can be keyword, author, subject headings or other fields. This search screen does not save search history nor does it have all of the options available to refine a search.

Advanced Search: This search screen is the recommended choice. It allows the searcher to do everything that the basic search screen does plus it keeps a history of searches completed and provides more options for refining searches.

Choose Database: Selecting this tab will connect the searcher to a listing of other databases available through your institution from EBSCO Host. From this screen it is easy to change databases or to select multiple databases to search simultaneously.

Active Buttons:

Keyword: When this option is selected the search engine looks for the terms entered in the Search Screen. Keywords appear highlighted in the Result List, Full Record, and Full Text (if available).

Publications: Selecting this button allows you to search the database of publications indexed in the CINAHL database. It can be searched in three different ways: alphabetical, by subject or by subject and description.

CINAHL Headings: This is the database of the subject headings assigned to citations in the database. Use this section to identify the subject headings for the terms that you are searching for.

Indexes: This option allows a searcher to browse the various indexes in the database such as author name, affiliation, language, publication type and most of the fields indexed in the database.
